How to activate Google Workspace (G Suite) Dark theme for Android

You may have noticed friends and coworkers using G Suite (Google Workspace) products or other applications with a darker interface. Whether as a way to prevent eye strain, conserve battery life, or simply to change it up, many G Suite users have opted to enable this interface using a feature called “Dark theme.” This feature adjusts not only the interface but also user-generated content such as document text to keep these elements lowly-lit and legible. This feature has long been available on desktop, but only just became available for Android smartphones.

To activate Dark theme (sometimes called “dark mode”) for Docs, Sheets, or Slides, follow these simple steps:

On your Android phone or tablet, open the app you wish to alter.

  1. Tap the Menu icon in the top left (looks like three horizontal lines).
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Choose theme.
  4. Select Dark.

You can change the theme back at any time by following the same steps and instead selecting “Light” or “System default.”
