Public Interest Registry Moves to Google Voice

About one year after a successful HiView-led transition to Google Workspace, Public Interest Registry (PIR) reached out to our team to explore VoIP options. Interested in finding an easy-to-deploy phone system compatible with remote work and integrated with the Google Workspace Admin console, PIR chose Google Voice.

The challenge

All staff was working from home and using their personal devices for work because the legacy VoIP solution was not user-friendly outside of the office. Additionally, their legacy solution offered no interoperability with the Google Admin console or with their Workspace collaboration environment.

The approach

Voice implementations are quite routine for our team of engineers, who are very familiar with key watchpoints that can make or break the project success.

Before implementation, HiView Change Managers prepared PIR’s team to use Google Voice through a series of admin and end user training sessions. Topics covered included how to configure key settings, using text and voicemail, ring groups, automated attendants, and much more.

As phone numbers were pre-assigned, Google Voice was implemented with zero downtime for users.The team followed our usual process for number porting: gather a list of phone numbers, confirm eligibility, request a port transfer through Google, check for errors, and re-request if necessary.  All implementation activities were handled by a HiView Google Cloud expert who ensured there would be no adverse impact to PIR’s productivity during or after the transition.
